We are relieved to see that Will did stand up to his uncle and took the job he wanted. That tells us a lot about Will’s character. It also tells us a lot about his father’s character too. Without that strong parental backing Will may not have had the strength to defy his uncle.
Sharon and Will are living full of happiness. Things are genuinely going their way. Will has the job he wants and Sharon finally has an interview that will get her out of the drugstore and doing what she learned in trade school. They are on their way.
This section is a simple snapshot of an evening of their life that reveals the simplicity of life and their optimism of the future. It also shows how their love for each other has grown.
Sharon is becoming more and more secure in Will’s love for her and each day she allows herself to let her guard down a bit more.
The moment that catches us in this scene is when Sharon realized she missed a pill. It happens. It doesn’t usually mean a thing, so she brushes it off even if slightly concerned.
She is so high on life at the moment, and so in love with Will that she simply disregards it. And honestly, what can she do? It is done and can’t be undone so there is no need to stress over it.
In contemplating what to discuss about this simple life scene I began to think about our own simple life scenes, the moments we often overlook and disregard.
The times in the school pickup line, just waiting. The repetitive trips up and down the grocery aisle. Gathering the piles of laundry and then washing, folding, and putting it all away one more time.
Our lives are made up of these simple daily snapshots and we overlook, disregard, and forget about them. We hope that in between there are spectacular moments that dazzle us.
But what if it is those simple moments that are the most dazzling? My daughter and her three children lived with me for a few months before buying a home. I was responsible for taking the younger two to school and picking them up.
In my late fifties it was a huge shift in my life. But I knew those simple moments were brass ring moments. I would not get another opportunity like that to impart something of worth into their lives. And without that life interruption I would not have had those precious moments with them.
I could go down the list of mundane things and remind you that we need to be more thankful but I think it is more than that. Each waking breathing moment is an opportunity. An opportunity to serve, worship, and commune with God and others.
I want to challenge myself to elevate those moments to spectacular by inviting God into those moments. I want to challenge myself to have an ear to hear his voice and to lend my voice to his ear with praise.
Simple moments. Simple moments that are the glue that hold all the others together. How strong is our glue and how can we make it stronger?
