There is something very important in this section that I want to point out. This is where Donna makes a conscious decision to do her best in the situation she is in.

She could have made up her mind to hate Buddy, but she chose to just hate the situation instead. And actually she knew that rather than hate her situation she would just shelve it and decide to make the most of it.

This decision is an important decision, not just for Donna, but for all of us. She is forced into a horrific situation and she could have decided to dwell on the horror of it all, but she chose a different way.

Buddy was so eager to please Donna that he would do anything for her, except free her. He had provided to the best of his ability a small cozy home for Donna and Molly Sue. And Donna took what he had provided and improvised and chose to become content in the situation.

Are you content in your situation? Did you realize that you have the ability to decide to become content? I dare say that none of us are facing the hardship that Donna is facing and yet we wallow in discontent.

For some reason, (cough, cough) social media shines a glaring light into our lives showing us all what we don’t have and should want in order to be happy, to be content. So, we grow more and more discontent.

What if we look around at all we do have and begin to become thankful for each seemingly small thing? There are so many who have a list of dreams and it looks just like your life.

When did we as a people become unsatisfied with a roof over our heads, food on our table, a job, friends, and family?

Need laughter? Sit around the table with a few friends playing a simple game of cards or dominoes.

Need encouragement? Go to church.

Need love? Find a charity or someone else who needs to be loved and give it away. You will automatically feel love.

These are simple things. But they are what really make life sing. Not the fancy car, clothes or house. Not the best decorations or parties. It is the simple times, the intimate times, the heartfelt times that you will long remember and cherish.

Simplify your desires and cherish those gifts you already have. Make that decision today just like Donna did.
