Trapped for Christmas. No family. No friends. No way to get and give presents. No way to cook a holiday feast. The yearning and longing was real and intense.
But Donna was determined to stay positive by force of sheer will. She had no other choice were she to keep her sanity and be able to take care of Molly Sue.
Her attempts to find a way of escape remain fruitless. They did have a decorated tree. Buddy went hunting and was able to bring a fine roast and a surprise fruitcake for a festive meal.
And they did have a good meal. And Buddy even had a gift for Donna. It was one that she would genuinely treasure.
But Donna had nothing to give Buddy. It is doubtful that she had even considered it ahead of time. But often the very best gifts are the gifts that we give of ourselves.
Donna gave something to Buddy that couldn’t be bought in a store. Something many people take for granted.
Today we are very focused on what we can buy to give. Sometimes we even are crafty enough to make a gift by hand, and those are often cherished one of a kind gifts.
But what if you found yourself in a financial bind right now, but wanted to give? Would you let it get you down and then sink into a depression mediating on how miserable you are for not being able to afford anything to give?
Or, would you get creative? Surely you have at least what Donna had, some paper and crayons. What of yourself could you give away that is of worth to someone you love?
What if you even made a little coupon book with 12 coupons, one to be redeemed each month of the year? You could have foot rubs, car washes/clean-outs, babysitting, errand running or grocery shopping. There are many things that cost us only our time that would mean so much to others.
We’ve all had lean times and usually we just apologize and say that we just didn’t have gifts in the budget that year. But let me encourage you to get creative. It isn’t lame, it is really considerate and it will be appreciated.
