When I wrote Marcia Wallace I had a distinct picture in my mind of an actress who played a similar part in a movie. Emotionless, curt, and bent on doing her job in such a way that she almost took glee from causing others pain.
Being in court is so hard. You try and anticipate the questions and have answer prepared, but you can’t always do that. It can take turns you never expected and there you are left with no sound answer and feeling like a fool. They plan it that way.
I was on the witness stand one day and I can remember feeling so much stress my mind was blanking out. I did recover enough to answer appropriately but it was a horrible experience that I hope I never have to repeat.
Marcia Wallace is determined to pull Molly Sue away from Sharon and the only ammunition she has is Sharon’s casual drinking and the lack of a father in the home. And she drives those points hard.
There is hope though when the Judge asks to talk with Molly Sue. She is such a joyful child we fully anticipate that she will charm the judge into letting her stay with Sharon.
But Molly Sue was frightened. She could sense the seriousness, she could feel it from the adults and it was unsettling. And she was sat down to face a man she didn’t know. Any child’s natural instinct would be to ask for their mother, which confused the judge.
If she were content, wouldn’t she be crying for Sharon? But, of course the judge can see right through this.
I wish our court systems were better. I wish those involved could see past their own achievement, success, and notoriety to the heart of the truth and the people involved.
I’ve served on a jury and saw the grandstanding of the DA first hand. He was like a banty rooster preening his feathers.
It didn’t turn out well for the defendant. There could have been a better solution for all involved, but each side wanted complete victory and not a productive compromise.
I’ve know people who were incarcerated for being in the wrong place and no one would listen to them or believe that they were innocent. So, they went to prison.
Yes, our justice system needs reform. I’ve heard that for years. But as long as we have fallible people, try to find some who aren’t, serving in the courts, it is likely to remain the same.
It makes perfect sense for Molly Sue to stay with Sharon until her mother is found, but no, Marcia wants to justify her job by breaking a little sweet family apart. She is needed to fix things.
Judge Abbernathy will see right past it all though. He is an intelligent judge and friends with Bill who has vouched for Sharon.
It is all just a bunch of hullabaloo over nothing. We hope.
