Winters are depressing. If it snows it can provide some beauty, but when the wind comes howling through, I for one want to run. I don’t like the cold and I don’t like the wind.
I can’t imagine what it would be like imprisoned in a small one room cabin. For Donna it was a full time job to stay positive. She fought back despondency continually.
She was learning how to do things though, like cook with limited resources. And it seems that Buddy is trusting her more and more.
And Molly Sue is growing, which is bittersweet for Donna. She is a joy to experience, but it is painful not being able to share it with her family and Molly Sue’s father.
In an attempt to find a way to stay positive, she decides she must make an inventory of reasons to be thankful. So she makes a physical list and attaches it to the wall where she can see it each day.
In our own lives I think in the deepest challenges and bouts of depression, this would be a good thing for us to practice. If we focus on the good things, the things we are thankful for then we won’t be focusing on the things that we wish we had, or the things that we feel are wrong with our life.
It takes practice, but a person can learn to develop an ongoing positive disposition. A demeanor where you are automatically seeing things in a positive way. A glass half full type of person.
Depending on how you were raised and your natural personality, it may come more naturally to you. For others, it may be more of a challenge, but in time with persistence you can do it.
I’ve worked my entire life to change things about the way I think and feel. I still have battles from time to time but overall I feel my demeanor has drastically changed from when I was younger.
I do practice thanking God for a long itemized list of blessings. I practice seeing the good in people instead of automatically focusing on negative things.
Doing this, living this way creates a much more peaceful outlook. Anxiety fades away and joy surfaces much more easily.
If you have tried this before but forget and fall back into old habits, try writing down a reminder in your calendar to think about what you are thankful for that day. Make it a habit. Plan for it. It is just as important, maybe more so than any work task you will ever need to do.
It is a good habit that will change your life and provide lasting rewards for decades to come.
