Talk about a punch in the gut. When I was writing this section and came to the end I felt heartsick. I am a mother and a grandmother and cannot even imagine having to send my small five year old daughter out into the dense woods to find help. I would have delayed just like Donna.
But the one thing that Donna didn’t account for was the intense personal relationship between Jesus and Molly Sue. It is very possible that all the while he had been speaking to her too.
As the lessons unfolded and Donna was teaching her, it is possible, highly probable, that Jesus was also discussing the outside world with her and what was about to happen.
When it was time, Jesus told Molly Sue, not Donna. She had to be wrenched with grief. She also had to trust God to take over where she couldn’t.
In our world parenting can be hard emotionally. These sweet children grow up right before our eyes. They need us less and less. They venture out on their own more and more. It is a balancing act for sure.
But one thing that is certain, if we don’t trust God in earnest to watch over and care for our children we are taking their lives in to our own hands and we can’t be with them 24/7.
When they begin driving and go out with friends we don’t have control over where they are and what they are doing. Parental obsessiveness has become a real thing.
This is the era of cell phones, smart phones, and trackers. Many parents obsessively monitor them to the point they can’t rest and enjoy their own lives any longer.
It may seem like the world is a more dangerous place now than when I raised my children, but the truth is that the bad things happening are just much more publicized now in social media than they was then.
You could say that what we did’t know didn’t hurt us. The evil was out there then, just like it is now. But now, it is continually thrust into our faces.
The best protection our children can have is a childhood of education. Education about right and wrong. Education about how to appropriately react in all situations. Education about morals and character for their own benefit and protection.
I’m not talking about putting the so called fear of God in them. I’m talking about education. I am not talking about making them so afraid that they don’t even want to leave the house. That is wrong and the opposite of faith.
If parents will do that all the formative years, it will build something in their children that they will unknowingly carry with them as they leave home.
Teach them about God’s protective covering over them, and then pray and trust God to do what you have prayed for.
