The moment that Sharon had been dreading confronted her when Bill mention finding Molly Sue a semi-permanent home. I’m not sure that Sharon had thought of losing Molly Sue in the interim before finding her mother. To her that was the next step, which would have been difficult, but understandable.
But handing her off to another stranger was unthinkable. A full blown panic attack engulfed Sharon. Bill could see what was happening and knew how Sharon would respond.
He approached her as cautiously as he could, but as an officer of the law he saw the need for Molly Sue to have a formal guardian just in case.
Sharon and Molly Sue had settled into a good routine and Sharon was taking good care of Molly Sue. After the first day, she had learned to see Molly Sue’s needs and make sure those needs were met.
She did love the little girl. She loved her life with the her. Her job took very little time away from their time together and when they weren’t together she made sure that she was in another nurturing environment.
Molly Sue was happy and healthy so it only made sense for her to stay where she was and for Sharon to be her temporary guardian.
But this was 1978. Times were very different and it was unheard of for a single person to be awarded a foster child. It was understood that the best environment for a child was a two parent home with both a mother and father figure.
For Sharon to have been given guardianship by the court system would have been remote. Sharon knew this and so did Bill.
Bill promised to talk to the judge directly to get a signed order. In Bill’s heart though I am not sure he felt living with Sharon was the best thing. He knew that the longer Molly Sue lived with Sharon, the more devastating it would be when she did have to go. Maybe taking her away now would be best. Get it over with and get on with healing.
Sharon had never been able to fully relax since Molly Sue had come to her. She love their time together and wallowed in the joy of it all, but to be honest she felt the impending doom of losing her. It never went away and grew more daunting every day.
