No matter how much we as adults trust in God, we will never again have that solid confident faith we had as little children. Molly Sue knew, really knew Jesus well. She talked to him and trusted in him completely.
When she heard the words of the bible, faith was seared into her personality, her heart and her mind. There was no other option for her.
As we grow we see prayers often seemingly unanswered. Questions grow and our faith falters. We stop believing that God will answer those prayers every single time we pray. It is confusing to us. Some stop believing all together.
Donna is struggling here. She is struggling between her fear of losing Buddy for her own sake and how she should be genuinely compassionate for him. But is that wrong? She did care about Buddy, but was acutely aware of what would happen should he die. So, she questioned her heart.
She is also struggling with having been out in the world and seeing how not everyone lives, not everyone received healing. The contrast between her and Molly Sue is night and day different.
But Donna does have faith and she does trust in God. Her diligence to continue to pray, do right, be thankful, read the bible and allow God to help her with a positive attitude in spite of her circumstances is a true testament to her faith.
I believe this is a mirror of us all. We may have areas of our lives that are strong and we are steady in trusting God. But we all have areas, different areas that we continually struggle with and continually work to turn over to God.
That could very well be by divine design. It is those struggles that keep us humble. It is those struggles that keep us seeking God. It is those struggles that cause us to lean on others. It is those struggles that build our character. We would do well to thank God for those short comings and the struggle they provide all while working to overcome them.
And… now we see the background story behind the scissors. Poor Buddy. We see how his childlike mind cannot reconcile the fear of injury as an adult. We can only imagine how horrible it was for him to suffer as a child.
It literally terrified him that Donna or Molly Sue would be hurt by scissors as he had been. And Donna finally understood.
