We see here that Sharon is happy. She has settled into a life with Will and has grown pretty confident in his love for her.
College is over and life changes and decisions are looming for Will. But Sharon can’t help but feel that those decisions will monumentally affect her life as well.
This is the first example of Will’s uncle’s dominance over his life. It has been alluded to previously, but here we actually see it in play.
We also see Will’s struggle with kowtowing to his uncle because he feels he owes it to him.
What is understood here is not just his uncles dominance, but the fingers of power that reach far and wide. Should Will choose to defy his uncle, will all other offers, the offers he truly wants to take, mysteriously disappear?
Will he be able to advance in his career the way he hopes or will his uncles influence prevent that?
His uncle appears to be incredibly manipulative in order to get what he wants. With his money and power we can suspect he almost always gets his way.
It is clear that he has had a hand in Will’s life in order to get what he wants from Will. What will happen if he does not get his way.
He also doesn’t want Will with Sharon. He sees her as lesser than and not in keeping with the career and status that he sees for Will. So if Will concedes to his uncles plan, then it will be the end for he and Sharon.
Have you ever experienced a situation like this? I know that we often seek status and prestige when we are growing up and coming of age. We want the status, the notoriety, the money, the fame. We believe it will bring us fulfillment or even just fun, maybe even freedom.
As we grow older those aspirations tend to take root and we are on a path or a treadmill if you will that is nearly impossible to get off of and something that takes a great amount of character to reject.
Sharon is stressed, and I can imagine that Will deciding not to see her that night when they have been inseparable, is adding to the voices in her head that are telling her to prepare, and prepare for the worst.
